Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival Welcomes all Edmontonians to celebrate Chinese Culture

EDMONTON, AB – SEPTEMBER 8, 2019 – Edmontonians from all backgrounds are invited to welcome Autumn at the Edmonton Downtown Farmers Market  with an Asian-style bazaar with colourful lanterns, folk music and performances, mooncakes, cultural games and activities, wandering costumed Chinese characters, and mouth-watering food truck menus. Take a tour of Chinatown to learn its past and present stories.

The Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival, aka the Moon Festival, is the second most important holiday in the Chinese calendar. Many Asian countries and North American Cities celebrate this festival, to mark the end of the harvest season, on the 15th day of the eight month of the lunisolar calendar, which falls in September or early October in the western calendar. This Thanksgiving holiday celebration includes brightly lit lanterns, moon-cakes, moon stories, and families being together. Families go to public places/ parks to admire the colourful lanterns and enjoy festivities throughout the day. Families and friends get together to celebrate with delicious dinners, give thanks, appreciate the moon, and exchange a variety of mooncakes with each other. The harvest moon is traditionally believed to be the brightest of the year.

For the past four years, our Mid-Autumn Lantern Festival is a proven success as one of the more memorable cultural events in the City of Edmonton. In the Mid-Autumn Festival tradition, there will be activities throughout the day and evening.
